Torquay, UK - People flood in to free day at Living Coasts Aquarium.

Thousands of visitors flocked to a Devon attraction that flung its doors open free of charge today.

Living Coasts waived the usual ticket price to celebrate Darwin’s 200th birthday.

Torquay’s coastal zoo typically receives around 100 visitors a day at this quiet time of the year. Today 2,250 people came through the doors.

Living Coasts Director Elaine Hayes said: “We wanted to do something really special to mark the day, so we decided to open for free. It was a great chance for people who don’t know Living Coasts to come and have a look – and a lovely way to reward our regular visitors. Children were wide-eyed with wonder, especially when they came face-to-face with penguins. And adults who had not been before were surprised and impressed by everything they were seeing. It shows how much interest there is in Living Coasts.

“Most people coming in for free today were local, too, which is especially good – they clearly recognize a bargain when they see one. It was a very busy day!”

Visitors were able to meet Mac, the conservation charity’s new mascot and figurehead.
