Potter Park Zoo's New Sign Truly Is A Work Of Art

Fri, 3/7/2008 - 3:21 PM

Below is a letter from the artist, and attached are a couple of "construction" pix of the sign in progress. It's going to take them a couple
more days to install all the palm fronds and grass.

The tiger weighed about 600 lbs. and they were installing it in 20 degree weather.

Letter from the artist:

Well, the tiger is finally done and ready to take its place on the platform. When I finished earlier this evening, I just stood back for a while in awe. I truly knew I could do it, but it was kind of like a dream actually seeing it standing there in front of me.

I can honestly say that in my 21 years in business, this is by far my favorite and most unique project I've done.

It was important to me that first and foremost, this project functioned as a sign. Naturally, the sign needs to provide identity. The primary goal of a sign is to connect with the viewers. And sometimes, its not always necessary to make that connection with letters and words. In fact, I would say that the actual lettering on this sign is secondary. Naturally, the animals incorporated into this sign says it all. When you look at the sign, you see the colors, textures, the animals- but that is not all that resonates with me. It's the combination of intuitive design and
storytelling, and how well they harmonize and interact. In other words, when someone looks at this sign, they will say, "WOW! LET'S GO TO THAT ZOO!

I truly consider it a privilege to have been able to be a part of this sign project from its conception all the way thru to its completion. Thank you,
Diane, for giving me this chance to be a part of this project and I look forward to working with you on many more!!!! It's exciting to think that I
had a part in providing Lansing with such a memorable and eye-catching landmark.

Thank you,
Robbin Sawyer
