ZooBrew is Back for 2010 and so Wild that Phoenix Zoo had to Rename the Event

Tue, 3/9/2010 - 8:35 PM

By Carolina Guana

Phoenix, AZ - The event formerly known as ZooBrew is back for 2010 and wilder than ever. Now called Rock the Zoo, this annual 21 and over party fundraiser promises plenty of music and merriment while raising money for the Phoenix Zoo. Nationally-recorded alternative rock band Vertical Horizon will energize the crowd with live performances throughout the night, while Marcy Playground will also make a guest appearance. Guests can sample beverages from more than 30 vendors ranging from national and small craft breweries to large scale and independent wineries. A silent auction and a host of other fun activities will round out the evening.

To “get your wild on” at this unique event, call 602.914.4333 or purchase tickets online at www.phoenixzoo.org/RocktheZoo2010. Guests must be 21 years and older; ID’s will be checked at the door.

General admission is $65 for members, $75 for non-members. VIP admission, which includes a catered meal, private bar and restrooms, is $125 for members and $135 for non-members (subject to availability).

More than 3,000 guests will party to the music of headlining band Vertical Horizon. Founded in 1991 by lead vocalists and songwriters Matt Scannell and Keith Kane, the alt-rock group released three independent albums before signing with RCA in 1999. Their first major album release, Everything You Want, went double platinum. The album’s title song was the most played single of 2000, hitting #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 charts. Other hit singles include “You’re a God” (which reached #4 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart) and “Best I Ever Had” (which also became a Top 20 country hit for Gary Allen in 2005). The band will undoubtedly keep the Zoo rocking with these tunes plus new material from their latest album, Burning the Days.

Guests will also enjoy the sounds of Marcy Playground, a highly original and melodic modern rock band, which exploded onto the scene back in 1997 with the insanely irresistible hit single “Sex And Candy,” a song that notched 15 consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard’s U.S. Modern Rock tracks chart. Subsequent albums Shapeshifter (1999) and Marcy Playground 3 (”MP3”) (2004), while commercially obscure by comparison, showcased two periods of tremendous creative evolution for the group, and have gone on to enjoy something of “cult classic” status among the band’s many loyal fans.

The 21-and-older crowd will also enjoy offerings from an assortment of beverage purveyors, including Samuel Adams, Jerome Winery, Odell Brewing Company, Espresso Italia and many more.

WHERE: Phoenix Zoo (455 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, AZ 85008)

WHEN: Friday, April 23, 2010 from 7-11:00 p.m.

With more than 125 acres of land and 2.5 miles of walking trails, the Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States. Approximately 1.5 million guests pass through the gates each year, making the Phoenix Zoo one of the most visited attractions in Arizona (second only to the Grand Canyon). While memberships, admissions and concessions cover some of the expense to operate and maintain the grounds of this beloved institution, the Zoo must also rely on fundraising events to provide proper care for more than 1,300 animals in the collection, including the new Komodo dragons.

Previously named ZooBrew, Rock the Zoo is one of the Phoenix Zoo’s most popular annual events, drawing more than 3,000 local residents each year. All proceeds from this fundraiser directly support the Phoenix Zoo’s mission and operations.

Unusual to have three snow leopard cubs Thu, 7/1/2010 - 2:58 AM — journeymaven

Congratulations to ABQ BioPark and the proud cat parents on the birth of three snow leopard cubs. That's fantastic news and we look forward to these three playing an important role in snow leopard survival breeding and also helping educate people about their endangered cousins in the wild.

Snow leopards live in some of the most extreme environments on earth - in high altitudes and freezing temperatures. If we don't do a lot of work with communities and governments in snow leopards 12 range countries, these beautiful cats may be extinct in the wild in our life time.

Love penguin fluffballs. Thu, 6/3/2010 - 5:06 PM — ConservationCute

I especially liked if you go to the zoo's homepage and click on the info about naming the baby, the winner says she'd like to be able to tell her dad that a penguin was named after him for his birthday. Adorable!

Elephants Fri, 5/7/2010 - 8:56 PM — tikitravel

Asome news on the new baby! I agree with everyone here on the fact that animals should not be in captivation. If you want to check out a really cool place in Thailand where you can care for elephants check out http://www.elephantstay.com this place is a sanctuary for retired working elephants, it's an amazing place and they do so much good for the animals who live there. I went a few months ago and it was amazing.

zoo animal diet's Mon, 4/19/2010 - 1:36 PM — veggiedude

It's ridiculous to try extrapolate zoo animals diet to human beings, and it flies in the face of all science of the last 30 years that looked into nutrition and health research. Maybe Rudy Socha was being sarcastic? I hope so.

I fully agree with you when it comes to the captivity of orcas. These animals live considerably shorter, unhealthier lives than they normally would have in the wild. I am disgusted by what I have seen at Sea World. They claim to be trying to educate people on the animals when really it is all nothing but a circus with the animals being made to perform to attract customers. I am a little more on the fence however when it comes to some other species of dolphins, such as the ones they keep at Vancouver Aquarium. While I do not support the capture of wild dolphins, I do recognize the fact that there are species that actually live longer and perhaps healthier lives in captivity than in the wild. One of the neat things at the Vancouver Aquarium is that none of the dolphins were captured for the purpose of entertainment: they were all animals that were rescued after getting caught and injured in fishing nets and are unable to return to the wild due to their injuries. I have seen the shows and the aquarium are truly focused more on educating visitors than trying to entertain them at the animals' expense.

Don't support it anymore Tue, 3/16/2010 - 7:31 AM — starseed2

I think we should move on from having dolphins in captivity now - we all know this isn't good for them.

pacaya samiria national reserve Sun, 1/24/2010 - 9:49 PM — amylynn

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a magical place.  The flora, fauna, remoteness and beauty are exquisite.  Another interesting aspect is how the indigenous people there live.  To learn more and see photos  taken by indigenous children in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, you can visit ninosdelaamazonia.org
