Friends of the Moonridge Zoo Announce the 50 Year Moonridge Animal Park Anniversary Concert
Big Bear Lake, CA - Friends of the Moonridge Zoo announce the 50 Year Moonridge Animal Park Anniversary Concert to celebrate this unique Alpine animal rescue sanctuary and to raise funds for its wildlife rehabilitation program. BLUES FOR THE ZOO Celebrating 50 Years of Sanctuary takes place Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Big Bear Lake Swim Beach Outdoor Amphitheater with a line-up of world class Blues artists. The musical program is being produced by the Open Sky Music Foundation, promoter of the successful Open Sky Music Festival, which ran for several years at Whaler Pointe Lakeside Park. The lakeside setting, located at 41220 Park Avenue in Big Bear Lake, offers a scenic backdrop for an afternoon of internationally recognized musicians plus a selection of local arts and crafts and a freshly prepared food/beverage menu. Headlining are the Delta Guitar Slingers, an all-star group featuring three heralded guitarists from the Blues’ current generation of virtuosos. With distinct styles and a body of respected recordings documenting their various careers, the Delta Guitar Slingers bring together Lucky Peterson, Michael Burks and Sherman Robertson on the same stage. This rare appearance unites Louisiana-born Robertson with Burks (who hails from Arkansas) and Dallas-based Peterson for a set of fire and brimstone blues. Guy Davis, an east coast singer-songwriter, steeped in the folk tradition shares the bill. Davis is known for Gospel tinged vocals and poignant original compositions. He also tips his hat to the great giants of the music, interpreting material by Leadbelly and Muddy Waters. Davis recently finished a run on Broadway in the revival of “Finian’s Rainbow.” He is the son of civil rights activists and actors Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee. Rounding out the day are Southern California favorites Cafe R&B. This band is led by powerful singer Roach, described by Hits Magazine as “Etta James riding a Harley out of an active volcano.” Muscular guitar and dynamic vocals exemplify Chicago Blues, with a modern twist. Cafe R&B will perform a mix of originals and Blues classics. Tickets, go on sale May 1, 2010 and are $35 in advance / $40 at the gate. Music runs 3:00pm to 7:30pm with gates opening at 2:00pm. Beach chairs and blankets are welcome for lawn, festival-style seating. No coolers please; a selection of food and beverage will be available on site. Parking is $3.00. Tickets will be available from the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, at the Moonridge Animal Park Gift Shop or online at www.moonridgezoo.org. The Moonridge Animal Park is Big Bear’s wildlife animal sanctuary, rehabilitation and education center founded in 1959. The Moonridge Animal Park is distinguished as the only zoological facility in the United States located in an Alpine environment, dedicated to the preservation of its indigenous species. The park is a fully licensed, designated care and rehabilitation facility for injured and confiscated animals. The majority of the rehabilitated animals are successfully released into the wild and those that cannot be released are provided a “Home for Life.” Friends of the Moonridge Zoo is the nonprofit organization with a mission to support the Moonridge Animal Park by inspiring understanding, respect and responsible action for wildlife and wildlife habitat through: public education, volunteer support, fundraising and development, and key project financial support. Congratulations to ABQ BioPark and the proud cat parents on the birth of three snow leopard cubs. That's fantastic news and we look forward to these three playing an important role in snow leopard survival breeding and also helping educate people about their endangered cousins in the wild.
Snow leopards live in some of the most extreme environments on earth - in high altitudes and freezing temperatures. If we don't do a lot of work with communities and governments in snow leopards 12 range countries, these beautiful cats may be extinct in the wild in our life time.

I especially liked if you go to the zoo's homepage and click on the info about naming the baby, the winner says she'd like to be able to tell her dad that a penguin was named after him for his birthday. Adorable!

Asome news on the new baby! I agree with everyone here on the fact that animals should not be in captivation. If you want to check out a really cool place in Thailand where you can care for elephants check out http://www.elephantstay.com this place is a sanctuary for retired working elephants, it's an amazing place and they do so much good for the animals who live there. I went a few months ago and it was amazing.

It's ridiculous to try extrapolate zoo animals diet to human beings, and it flies in the face of all science of the last 30 years that looked into nutrition and health research. Maybe Rudy Socha was being sarcastic? I hope so.
I fully agree with you when it comes to the captivity of orcas. These animals live considerably shorter, unhealthier lives than they normally would have in the wild. I am disgusted by what I have seen at Sea World. They claim to be trying to educate people on the animals when really it is all nothing but a circus with the animals being made to perform to attract customers. I am a little more on the fence however when it comes to some other species of dolphins, such as the ones they keep at Vancouver Aquarium. While I do not support the capture of wild dolphins, I do recognize the fact that there are species that actually live longer and perhaps healthier lives in captivity than in the wild. One of the neat things at the Vancouver Aquarium is that none of the dolphins were captured for the purpose of entertainment: they were all animals that were rescued after getting caught and injured in fishing nets and are unable to return to the wild due to their injuries. I have seen the shows and the aquarium are truly focused more on educating visitors than trying to entertain them at the animals' expense.
I know that Christian is dedicated to her aquarium job and to the rehab of sea turtles. I am proud of her.

I think we should move on from having dolphins in captivity now - we all know this isn't good for them.
The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a magical place. The flora, fauna, remoteness and beauty are exquisite. Another interesting aspect is how the indigenous people there live.
