Wolf Eels Are Now Howling at Georgia Aquarium

Atlanta, GA - Georgia Aquarium is excited to announce the addition of six new wolf eels (Anarrhichthys ocellatus) into the Cold Water Quest gallery presented by Georgia-Pacific. These shallow-water species, which are not classified as eels but as members of the “wolffish family,” can be found in the rocky reefs of the North Pacific, from Japan across Aleutian Islands and Alaska to Southern California. Their long, tubular bodies can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh up to 40 lbs. While wolf eels have demonstrated docile behavior, they carry a menacing look and can attack if provoked. If so, the recipient will receive a painful bite from the eel’s long, sharp teeth. During daylight hours, the gruesomely attractive wolf eel rests in a cave or crevice where it establishes a den. At night it prowls the reef and nearby bottom areas looking for crabs, clams, snails and sea urchins to eat. The wolf eels come to the Georgia Aquarium from the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

WHEN: The wolf eels are on display for all guests of the Georgia Aquarium in the Cold Water Quest gallery.

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a magical place.  The flora, fauna, remoteness and beauty are exquisite.  Another interesting aspect is how the indigenous people there live.  To learn more and see photos  taken by indigenous children in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, you can visit ninosdelaamazonia.org
