Treehugger Picks Monterey Bay Aquarium As a Finalist For "Best in Green"
Monterey, CA - The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program is one of eight finalists for the first “Best in Green” Award from influential green website TreeHugger.com. The public can vote online to choose the overall “Best in Green 2009” winner until midnight Eastern time on Thursday, April 30. Seafood Watch made it to the finals after it was selected by voters as the “Best of Green in Food and Health” – beating out 25 other nominees including First Lady Michelle Obama, chef Alice Waters and food writer Michael Pollan. To vote for the “Best in Green” nominees, visit TreeHugger.com’s sister website, PlanetGreen.com at http://planetgreen.discovery.com/games-quizzes/vote-treehugger-winners.html. Since its debut in 1999, Seafood Watch has become the most influential consumer seafood selection tool in the United States. The Monterey Bay Aquarium (www.montereybayaquarium.org) has distributed more than 27 million Seafood Watch pocket guides to help individuals make seafood choices that protect the long-term health of ocean ecosystems. Seafood Watch is also available as an iPhone application, and for all internet-enabled mobile devices. In 2008, Bon Appétit Magazine named Monterey Bay Aquarium as its “Tastemaker of the Year,” Seafood Watch (www.seafoodwatch.org) for its influential role in transforming seafood buying habits across the United States. Beyond influencing individual consumers, the aquarium has partnered with the two largest food service companies in North America – Compass Group and ARAMARK – which have made commitments to shift their purchase of millions of pounds of seafood annually to sustainable sources. In 2009, the Monterey Bay Aquarium celebrates 25 years of inspiring ocean conservation.
