The first addition to the Zoo's venomous snake exhibit was donated by the Department of Natural Resources.
Timber rattlesnakes were listed as " a protected wild animal" in 1998.
They can be found from Minnesota to Texas and in the Southwest corner of Wisconsin and along the Mississippi River corridor to pierce county.
They are not a major threat to humans or livestock. They are timid and feed mostly on small mammals.
Henry Vilas Zoo hopes to add a Massasauga (swamp Rattlesnake) to the new vanomous exhibit as soon as one becomes available.
