Butterfly House with 8,000 square foot tropical conservatory and an additional 8,000 square foot of living exhibit space, theater and classroom. More than 1000 tropical butterflies flying all year, representing more than 60 species.

Unique immersion experience walking among an extensive tropical butterfly collection as well as a beautiful botanical collection. Many arthropods are on exhibit throughout the facility, inlcuding arachnids, beetles, stick insects, roaches and others.

Jan. 3: Winter Wonders. Learn what helps insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles make it through the coldest months of the year. Find out how insects survive even during ice storms. Kindergarten through second grades. 10:30 a.m. to noon. $18 non-members, $16 members per class (one child and one adult). Pre-registration required; (636) 5300076, ext. 13.

 

Jan. 9: Camp Bugaloo: Autumn. Explore the seasons with a preschooler through favorite books and activities. Ages two to four, with a parent or guardian. Jan. 24 & 25: “Hot, Hot, Hot!” Shake off winter’s chill during two days of family fun with a tropical theme! Enjoy live music, games and crafts for ages two to eight at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Included with Butterfly House admission.

 

Feb. 2 through 6: The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is closed for maintenance. 

 

Feb. 10:Xeriscaping” class. Design your garden to withstand drought conditions by implementing the techniques of xeriscaping. 10 a.m. to noon. $15 non-members, $12 members. Pre-registration required, (636) 530-0076, ext. 13.

Feb. 28 through Mar. 31: It’s “March Morpho ManiaTM” at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House! Big, bright blue morpho butterflies are our visitors’ favorite, and all month long more than 1,000 of them will be released inside the Tropical Conservatory. Don’t miss this dramatic sight while it lasts! Learn more about butterfly farms and where these tropical beauties are raised in Costa Rica.

 

Mar. 11: Members’ Event: March Morpho ManiaTM at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Missouri Botanical Garden members can discover the story behind March Morpho ManiaTM and learn about the Butterfly House’s participation in important work in Costa Rica. Mar. 29; Apr. 5, 19 & 26: BUZZ: Arthropod Warriors. How did small insects become so successful? Find out the ferocious facts that let these tiny warriors rise to the top. Students learn adaptations and defenses of one invertebrate group and build their own model. At the end of class, they “battle” their models against dangers found in the wild. 12:30 to 2 p.m. $65 non-members, $57 members for the set of four classes (one child and one adult). The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield opened to the public on Sept. 18, 1998. In honor of the attraction’s tenth anniversary, visitors will enjoy free admission all day long on Thursday, Sept. 18. Visit the weekend immediately following, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21, as the celebration continues with a special buy one, get one free admission offer.

The Butterfly House is home to more than 60 species of tropical butterflies. Step inside the 8,000-square-foot butterfly conservatory to mingle with more than a thousand of these creatures in free flight, or watch as butterflies emerge from their chrysalides in the Miracle of Metamorphosis display.
Examine different “Butterflies of the World” side by side and get up close to arachnids, arthropods and other animals inside the exhibit hallway. Step outside to the native landscaped Butterfly Garden to see plants that attract fluttering visitors.
The Butterfly House is located at 15193 Olive Blvd. in Faust Park. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; closed Mondays.
Admission is free for all visitors on Sept. 18. On Sept. 20 and 21, buy one admission and get a second admission of equal or lesser value free. Regular admission is $6 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, and $4 for children ages four to 12. Children age three and under are free.
