On display are over 60 non-releasable birds of 33 species native to the northwestern US, primarily raptors: including 12 species of owls, five types of falcons, nine kinds of hawks, bald and golden eagles, white-tailed kites, osprey and turkey vultures. A nature center and wildlife hospital specializing in birds of prey, Cascades Raptor Center is set on a wooded hillside in Eugene OR. Incorporated in 1990, CRC is dedicated to preserving a healthy and viable population of birds of prey and other wildllife in their natural habitat through rehabilitation and public education.
Open six days a week, CRC has the largest collection of native raptors on display in Oregon. The birds live in large outside aviaries set along gravel trails in a wooded, natural setting. Visitors can see species traditionally very difficult to find in the wild, like the Northern pygmy owl or gyrfalcon, and learn about their natural history through signage, talks with staff and volunteers, and informal weekend programs. Situated next to a hiking trail (the Ridgeline Trail) that traverses the boundary hills on the south side of the city, visitors can extend their experience of the Oregon woods to include a hike up Spencer Butte for a breath-taking view of the Cascade Mountains and the Willamette Valley.
