The San Diego Zoo is a non-profit conservation organization that is home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing approximately 800 species and subspecies on a 100 acre property. The Zoo has a diverse collection of animal and plant species and is well known for its lush naturalistic habitats and unique animal encounters. The Zoo has four giant pandas: the young female, Su Lin, adult female Bai Yun, adult male Gao Gao, and female, Zhen Zhen, a baby born in 2007. Monkey Trails and Forest Tales Monkey Trails, located in the heart of the Zoo, takes guests on an excursion into Asian and African forests flourishing with some of natures most imperiled wildlife, including mandrills, the largest and one of the most colorful of African monkeys; rare pygmy hippopotamus; venomous snakes and rare crocodilians. Gorilla Tropics, Absolutely Apes with two critically endangered ape species: orangutans and siamangs together Groundbreaking for the Elephant Odyssey multispecies habitat has begun with completion expected in the spring of 2009. The 7-acre habitat will feature relatives of animal species that dotted the Southern California landscape more than 10,000 years ago such as elephants, lions and wild horses.
Our giant panda research center is state-of-the art. Rare Animals: Northern koalas from Australia; Sichuan takins and lesser pandas from central China; Buergers tree kangaroos from New Guinea; clouded leopards from Vietnam; Indian gharials; Visayan warty pigs; collared lories, Micronesian kingfishers, Bali mynahs, a variety of hornbills and much more. The Zoos botanical garden has a prominent collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. Our Children's Zoo is one of the best, if not THE best you'll find anywhere!
