Moose Facts

Moose
Height
Height at the shoulders generally ranges between 6 ½-7 ½ feet.

Weight
A moose generally weighs 1200-1500 pounds.

Food
A moose's teeth are specially designed for eating plant materials and for browsing on bushes and small trees. In the summer, moose wade and swim through marshes and lakes, eating water plants. They also eat the tender shoots such as birches, willow, or poplar. In the winter, they will forage near the edges of forests, eating plant material such as bark or branches.

Life Span
Moose live 15- 25 years.

Reproduction
The female has one to two calves that are born in the late spring- May or June, after a 230 day gestation.

Colors
The adult has a dark brown coat. The young are reddish brown.

Habitat
Moose live in the northern parts of America and Eurasia in forests and marshy areas.

Interesting Facts
Moose have 27 pairs of chromosomes compared with 23 pairs in humans.

The moose is the world's largest deer. The moose can run 35 miles per hour and can easily swim 10 miles.

While a male may use its antlers to hold off a predator, a moose's sharp hooves are its first line of defense. Moose are able to kick out in all directions, but generally use their front feet.

Each year in Alaska, there are more moose-related deaths than bear-related deaths.

Only mature bull moose have antlers. Moose shed their antlers before the winter each year and grow them back in the spring.

Moose antlers reach a width of up to 6 ft and a weight of up to 44 pounds.

Sub Species
There are 7 species in the Northern hemisphere.
