Through January and February, Audubon Zoo (6500 Magazine St.) is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Friday, and 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday. Beginning March 2, 2010, the Zoo will be open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday through Sunday.

 

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (1 Canal St.), Entergy IMAX® Theatre (1 Canal St.) and Audubon Insectarium (423 Canal St.) are open 10am to 5pm, Tuesday through Sunday. All facilities are closed on Mondays and Mardi Gras Day.

“Black History Scavenger Hunt”

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Audubon Insectarium

February, 6 & 7 – 13 & 14 – 20 & 21– 27 & 28, 2010

Visitors ages 3-17 years will hunt for Black History and animal facts throughout the Aquarium of the Americas and the Insectarium.  All participants receive a trinket for participating, and their names go into drawing for a “free” family membership. Drawings will take place each weekend for the family membership give away.

 

“Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club Display”

The rich history and culture of Zulu will be showcased throughout the month of February through a special Black History display in the lobby of the Entergy IMAX Theatre.

 

 

 

Zulu Lundi Gras Festival

The 2010 Zulu Lundi Gras Festival will surely live up to its reputation for the 18th consecutive year, when the 500 members of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club host a full day of fun and excitement along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. The festival event will feature local and world-renowned entertainers performing on three stages. The Lundi Gras Festival will also add flavor to your day when food vendors kick up the Cajun aroma of crawfish pie, shrimp creole, file' gumbo, alligator sausage, Jamaican chicken, crawfish bread, catfish po-boys, peach cobbler, pecan pie and many more New Orleans delicacies. And, don’t miss the arrival of the Zulu King by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter and his entourage at 5:00pm.

Soul Fest

March 13-14, 2010

Soul Fest, now in its SEVENTH year, is a celebration of African American food, music, crafts and culture. It was created to celebrate the achievements of African Americans while educating Zoo visitors about their heritage, culture and wellness. The festival will showcase handmade arts and crafts by local and national artisans, and feature local businesses exhibiting their products and services. In addition, the festival will offer delectable Creole cuisine and authentic soul food dishes prepared by native Louisianans. Soul Fest will incorporate cultural awareness and community outreach with gospel sounds, R&B entertainment and hip-hop artists, setting the stage for smooth, rhythmic strolling under majestic 100 year-old oak trees. 

 

Earth Fest

Audubon Zoo

Earth Fest is a fun way for Zoo visitors to learn about saving our environment. Exhibitors will represent groups from non-profit, government and private businesses involved in

environmental issues. Local restaurants and caterers will offer taste-tempting fare including poboys, chicken and andouille gumbo, fried eggplant and more, prepared by native Louisianans. Additionally, artisans will be showcasing their handmade arts and crafts.

Cultural celebrations are fun ways to learn about the world’s animals and peoples. Make Audubon's Mardi Gras Camp part of your child's celebration. Each day is full of animal exploration, scientific investigation, crafts and more at Audubon Zoo! Before and After Care is available – $7 for Before Care and $10 for After Care. This event is created for kids from Kindergarten to 5th Grade. Spaces are limited!

Spend the night camping at Audubon Zoo! This family fun event lets you into the Zoo after everyone else goes home. Evening snack and continental breakfast are included. When registering for dates (see below), you can get more specifics about themes and areas. This event is created for kids 5 years and older. Breakfast with the Bugs

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas

Join us at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and learn all about some of the most amazing animals that nature has to offer. Enjoy a delicious breakfast as you hear from our bug experts, make a craft, and maybe even sample some bug food! Please note that the regular breakfast offered at this event does not contain insects. Afterward, enjoy your day exploring the Aquarium. Advanced registration is required to attend; registration is available through www.auduboninstitute.org -  prices include admission to the Aquarium.

 

 

National Environmental Education Week

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas

Come celebrate wildlife and conservation learning at the Aquarium during this weekend celebration. Events include arts and crafts, live animal demonstrations, and plenty of fun hands-on learning for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages. This event is free with regular Aquarium admission.

 

World Penguin Day

Come celebrate World Penguin Day with our fine feathered friends! Learn all about these fascinating aquatic birds, and what’s being done to protect them in the wild. Event includes arts and crafts, penguin chats and feeding narrations, and lots of hands-on fun! Positively Pengutastic! This event is free with regular Aquarium admission.

 

Aquakids Teen Volunteer Program

March 31 – Application Deadline

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas Education Department is currently accepting applications for its Aquakids teen volunteer program. Applicants must be between the ages of 13-14, and able to make at least a one-year commitment to the program. Please email lmelancon@auduboninstitute.org to receive an application packet.

 

Aquacorps Teen Volunteer Program

March 31 – Application Deadline

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas Volunteer Department is currently accepting applications for its Aquacorps teen volunteer program. Applicants must be between the ages of 15-16, and able to make a commitment to volunteer at the Aquarium through the summer. Please email lmelancon@auduboninstitute.org to receive an application packet.

 

Aquavan Outreach Program

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas Aquavan program is currently booking visits for the spring 2010 school semester. The Aquavan brings the excitement of the Aquarium to your classroom, allowing students to explore the teeming life of a coral reef, the natural treasures of a tropical rainforest, and much, much more! The Aquavan comes with amazing animals, enthusiastic presenters and an endless fascination of nature's wonders. Thanks to the generosity of Chevron Corporation, the Aquavan is able to offer one free visit per school year to all area Title 1 schools.
