The Marine Mammal Center has been around since 1975 and is a rescue, rehabilitation and research facility for sick and injured seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals. The Center operates with 45 staff and over 800 volunteers rescuing animals along 600 miles of California coastline. The Center's headquarters are in Sausalito, California and it operates triage rescue operations in Monterey Bay and Morro Bay. On average, the Center rescues and treats 500 animals a year. Since 1975, it has rescued over 13,000 marine mammals. Marine mammals are rescued by our trained volunteers and then brought to the hospital for medical diagnosis and treatment which can include surgeries and rehabilitation. Once patients are healthy, they are released back to the ocean.

Researchers at the Center also study the patients' diseases and conduct groundbreaking studies into sea lion cancer, toxic algae poisoning and antibiotic resistance. The results of these and other studies are published in medical journals for other veterinarians and researchers around the world to reference. The Marine Mammal Center is the only facility of its kind that combines the areas of marine mammal medicine, research and education to respond to marine mammals in need along 600 miles of coastline. It does so thanks to the help and dedication of over 800 trained volunteers and donations from members.
