Burgers' Zoo

Antoon van Hooffplein 1
Arnhem, Gelderland 6816 SH
The Netherlands

Burgers' Zoo attracts more than 1.5 million visitors annually. The park size covers 45 hectares (one hectare being 100 x 100 meters). Burgers' Zoo is situated northly to the city of Arnhem ('A bridge too far') in the Netherlands and keeps more than 10.000 animals in more than 500 different species.

Burgers' Zoo is know for its so-called 'eco-displays': large exhibits which try to represent a specific part of nature (e.g. a tropical rainforest, a rock desert, a tropical reef) as accurately as possible. Animals live as freely as possible in these large exhibits and visitors are encouraged to explore the eco-displays by themselves. Burgers' Bush for instance, is a completely indoor tropical rainforest covering 1.5 hectares (150 x 100 meters), where visitors find thousands of tropical plants and animals. Burgers' Ocean is a tropical reef of 8 million liters of water, where you will find living corals, coral fishes, sharks, rays and many more animal species. Burgers' Desert represents the Sonora and Mojave rock desert (Arizona and northern Mexico). Burgers' Mangrove has an interesting selection of mangrove plants and animals. Burgers' Safari represents eastern Africa (Kenya and Tanzania) and is home to the largest herd of pure breed Rothschild-giraffes in Europe. Key species here are giraffes, zebras, white rhinos and several antilope species. A little further visitors find lions and cheetahs. Besides these ecodisplays, the zoo has a large bird section and keeps larger mammals as gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utans, elephants, panthers and so on.
