Susan Dwyer is a veteran licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Connecticut. Rehabbers in CT are all volunteers, the majority rehabbing in their homes, while working full-time jobs. There are so few rehabbers left that Susan founded Safe Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation Center this year. Safe Haven is in temporary quarters while funds are rased for a permanent home. Safe Haven primarily raises orphaned wildlife from raccoons and most other mammals to birds and amphibians. The current facility allows for 450-500 babies a season. The permanent facility will be able to admit 600-700 babies per season when it is complete. Species raised include raccoons, skunks, foxes, weasels, woodchucks, mink, opossums, squirrels, bunnies, birds, turtles, salamanders and frogs. We do not rehab snakes, raptors or bats.
Our mission as licensed wildlife rehabilitators is to help orphaned, injured or debilitated wildlife, so they may continue their natural roles in nature. Development has forced so many animals out of their environment, and injured and dead parents leave orphans who need our care. There are so few rehabbers in the state that Safe Haven was formed as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to support in-home rehabbers, educate the public about wildlife and the environment, and of course, our primary purpose -- Caring for Nature's Babies.
