The National Zoological Park is a part of the Smithsonian Institution, the worlds largest museum and research complex. The Smithsonian includes 18 museums and galleries, as well as the National Zoo. The words "National Zoo" represent a large, complex, and diverse organization with a multifaceted mission: demonstrate leadership in animal care, science, education, and sustainability. Open to the public 364 days a year, we are home to 2,000 individual animals of nearly 400 different species. The Zoo is one of Washington's and the Smithsonian's most popular tourist destinations. We welcome up to two million visitorsfrom the local community, the country, and the rest of the worldevery year, free of charge.

Our best known residents are our giant pandas, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang, and their cub, Tai Shan.

Tai Shan’s Farewell Celebration

Join us at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat to celebrate Tai Shan and the Zoo’s ongoing commitment to giant panda conservation. It’s your chance to say goodbye to Tai Shan and learn how the Zoo worked to conceive, raise, and care for him.

The first 500 people to visit the timeline will receive a Tai Shan postcard. The LAND O’LAKES Butterstick Tribute will showcase photos of Tai Shan since his birth in 2005.

The first 50 kids to visit the FONZ membership table will receive a giant plush panda. All kids will receive crayons from Fujifilm and a special treat from Whole Foods Market. Commemorative merchandise featuring Tai Shan will also be available for sale.
