Conservators' Center

209 Spruce Lane
Burlington, NC 27302
USA

Conservators' Center is on 45 acres of rural land, and houses close to 100 animals of 19 species. Almost all are wild carnivores, including 35 big cats! We have lions, tigers (including a white tiger), wolves, binturongs, caracals, bobcats, servals, and many more. The large cats are rescued animals here in sanctuary. The smaller animals come as rescues or stay with us as the home of choice by people seeking to place them when they have to close their zoos or move to a place that does not allow ownership. All tours are by appointment only, and may be scheduled though our web site or tour phone line. Specialty tours like Twilight Tours and Photography opportunities are also available. In addition, we offer educational programs on and off site for all ages. We also offer volunteer opportunities, college level internships, and international staff exchange programs. Contact us for more information.

On your visit to the Center, you will be accompanied by a guide who knows each animal personally. This means the wolves and tigers and other animals come right up to greet our guests. Your guide will teach you how to talk to a tiger, properly greet a lion, and howl with the New Guinea Singing Dogs. You will have the opportunity to hear each animal's story, and to learn about each species. Though the Center does not sell animals, we do occasional have cubs from smaller species born on site to our conservation breeding program, and these may be available for viewing. You will never more more up close at personal than at Conservators' Center.

great animals/people Mon, 8/17/2009 - 5:35 PM — wcopelan

My wife and I had the opportunity to take a twilight tour last week.  It was only the two of us and yet our tour guide, Julia, spent over 3 hours introducing us to the myriad animals at the Center and answering our endless questions.  We were completely impressed.

We knew that we were in a very special place when we were able to hear a chorus of New Guinea singing dogs singing, wolves howling, and lions and tigers roaring - all at the same time.  It was truly unforgettable.  Beware, however.  If you spend that much time with the animals, you will inevitably find yourself wanting to help the animals in whatever way is possible for you.  For my wife and me, it means becoming lifetime adopters of Shelby the tiger.

We are looking forward to returning many times and we have already recommended the Center to friends, neighbors, and family members.

amazing place Mon, 8/10/2009 - 2:41 PM — JAF

The Conservators’ Center is an absolutely amazing place. If you want to visit a place that truly helps animals live happy, healthy lives, visit the Conservators’ Center! The first time I went to the Center I was treated like family. The guides on my tour were so intelligent and knowledgeable about the animals, that I didn’t want the tour to end and we even ended up talking for several hours after the tour was over!

Several, if not most, of the remarkable animals at the Center are rescues and have lived through some really horrible experiences before coming to the Conservators’ Center. However, they look so happy at the Center. You can see tigers playing with their toys and relaxing in bathtubs, lions stretched comfortably out on their hammock-like structures, and if you bring bananas, you can even see your guides feed the binturongs. After my initial visit, I knew I would go back and have been back several times. Every time I go, I see and learn something new. I HIGHLY recommend a trip (or several) to the Conservators’ Center. You will not regret it and you will love the animals!

The Conservators' Center, Inc. is awesome! Mon, 8/10/2009 - 10:24 AM — Jessie

The Center is an awesome opportunity to learn about and get close to large cats, wolves and more!  I first came to the Center to learn about their captive breeding program, and now am working as a volunteer there and absolutely love it!  I hope to become a  Lifetime Adopter of one of the animals very soon!  If you love to learn about, see, and help animals, visit the Center!
