New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium

Hatchery Road, Portobello
Dunedin, Otago 9014
New Zealand

The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre is part of the University of Otago's Marine Science Department. The small aquarium houses only southern New Zealand species. In the Aquarium there are at least 100 different species including seahorses, sea stars, brittle stars, pigfish, shellfish, octopus, sharks, skate, moki, blue cod, marble fish, trumpeter, greenbone, bellows fish, triple fins, leather jackets, anemones, crabs, crayfish, and a range of different algae. The Aquarium comprises a large circular tank in the reception area, two outdoor ponds (original historic fish hatchery ponds), a small aquarium with 10 tanks of varying sizes, and some touch pools.

The facility was opened in 1904 as a Fish Hatchery and Marine Biological Station. It was the only such institution in Australasia. The Portobello Aquarium showcases the history and current research of the Portobello Marine Laboratory and features a stunning selection of the marine life in Otago Harbour. Since 1950 it has been owned by the University of Otago and is the southern most marine biology station in the world. The Aquarium is open to the public seven days a week from 10am to 4.30pm. The Marine Studies Centre runs education programmes for school children of all ages. Programmes range from 1 hour to several days in duration.
