July at the Zoo
Wednesday, July 1 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features our rare red pandas and Matschie’s tree kangaroos. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you learn about these endangered exotic beauties from China and New Guinea.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Make a red panda mask
- A coloring activity
- Learning from the Zookeepers about these rare creatures and what you can do to help them from going extinct
Saturday, July 4 – Independence Day – The Zoo is open and it is a great place to celebrate our nation’s independence with your family and friends. The Zoo will be closing early today at 3:00 p.m.
Monday, July 6 – Wild Hair Day – Some Zoo residents are almost bald like the naked mole rats and some of the Zoo’s residents have 1,000’s of hairs per square inch like the harbor seals. Wear your hair in a wild way and receive $1 off a child’s regular priced and 50 cents off a child’s train ticket (cannot be combined with other offers or discounts).
Wednesday, July 8 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features beautiful butterflies and bountiful bugs. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you get “bugged” and learn about the animals which truly cover the earth.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Make a butterfly magnet
- Create a pipe cleaner spider
- Put together a paper chain caterpillar
- Discover pop bottle fireflies
- Meet “Dan the Butterfly Man” – Lincoln’s own specialist on butterflies and the Monarch migration
Thursday, July 9 – National Hot Dog Day – Celebrate an American favorite today by receiving a great price on our famous hot dogs at the Safari Café all day long.
Friday, July 10 – 11:30 a.m. – Enjoy an impressive and entertaining karate demonstration by Sei Shin Kan Karate on the Stego Stage.
Monday, July 13 – Funky Shirt Day – Embrace your geekiness and wear your favorite funky shirt.
Wednesday, July 15 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features the colorful and raucous scarlet macaws. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you learn about these big birds from the tropical rain forests of South America.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Bird beak activities – learn why a macaw’s beak is so handy for eating nuts
- Make your own finger puppet
- Live music on the Stego Stage featuring Lance Schupbach. Lance’s fun family sing-a-long entertainment was so much fun last year that he is back by popular demand.
- Meet the macaws with a Zookeeper
July 17 - LincolnCity Libraries BOOKMOBILE – 12:00 – 1:15 p.m. in the bus lane in front of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo.
July 19-25 – Zookeepers’ Week – Help us thank our Zookeepers forthe excellent job they do, taking care of our special animal friends.
Wednesday, July 22 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features the strange protective coverings of the tenrecs and the armadillos. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you learn about these mammals that are covered in spikes and armor.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Make your very own armadillo
- Create a pinecone tenrec
- Meet “Fez” the three-banded armadillo
- Pet one of the Zoo’s spiky tenrecs
Thursday, July 23 – Thirsty Thursday – The Zoo will quench your summer thirst with drink specials today.
Monday, July 27 – Sundae Monday – While you travel about the Zoo today enjoy a special Sundae on Monday. Today’s Safari Café special will be a guaranteed taste pleaser.
July 29 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features creatures no longer walking the earth – dinosaurs. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you learn about these fascinating beasts under Lincoln’s own Stegosaurus.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Create a dinosaur hat
- Dig into a special Stego’s Big Dig activity
- Learn how BIG dinosaurs were when they walked about
July 31 - LincolnCity Libraries BOOKMOBILE – 12:00 – 1:15 p.m. in the bus lane in front of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo.
August at the Zoo
Sunday, August 2 – National Clown Week Kick-Off – Celebrate a national heritage – Clowns! Today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and meet the fun-loving clowns of Calliope #40 as you stroll the Zoo.
Monday, August 3 – Funny Hat Day – Be bold, be silly, have fun, have hat, come to the Zoo wearing your bold, beautiful, beastly or bodacious hat today.
Wednesday, August 5 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features birds – big and beautiful. Have fun from 5-8 p.m. while you learn about these fascinating winged wonders from around the world.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Meet the Zookeeper and learn about birds
- Create a paper plate dove
- Feathers, feathers and more feathers
- Live music on the Stego Stage featuring Lance Schupbach. Lance’s fun family sing-a-long entertainment was so much fun last year that he is back by popular demand.
Thursday, August 6 – Thirsty Thursday – The Zoo will quench your summer thirst with a delightful and special drink today.
Wednesday, August 12 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features cats – large and small. Have an evening of “purrrfect” fun as you learn about these fascinating felines from 5-8 p.m. Meet the Zoo’s very rare and beautiful Amur leopards and be amazed at “Zeus” the bobcat and his athletic abilities.

- Create your own leopard mask
- Create an origami cat
- Have fun with fur
- Experience a bobcat demonstration
Friday, August 14 – Kool-Aid Day – Celebrate a fun drink made right here in Nebraska. Enjoy Kool-Aid before you head back to school.

Wednesday, August 19 – Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme turtles and tortoises from around the world. Learn about the difference between a turtle and a tortoise from 5-8 p.m. Understand why one has webbed feet and learn about the amazing shells they carry on their backs.
Tonight’s activities include:
- Create your own take home turtle craft
- Encounter the turtle cart with many shells and natural artifacts
- Learn what a turtle, a terrapin and a tortoise are and learn how to tell the difference.
Wednesday, August 26 – Last Wild Wednesday – The Zoo will be open until 8 p.m. Tonight’s theme features two of the Zoo’s vocal and active swingers – the white-handed gibbons and the black and white ruffed lemurs. Have as much fun as a barrel of monkeys as you learn that the gibbon is NOT a monkey and that the word “lemur” means ghost.
Tonight’s activities include:

· Play a primate game
· Visit with the gibbon and lemur keeper
