Sea Turtles at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

Surviving millions of years, rare and endangered sea turtles make their home in the museum's 70,000-gallon aquarium. A 7-inch thick, floor-to-ceiling acrylic viewing window allows visitors to see eight loggerheads, two kemps ridleys, and the museum's latest addition, a green sea turtle. Visitors can come eye-to-eye with these amazing reptiles as they gracefully swim throughout their habitat.

Spadefish, cobia, lookdown and permit are some fish that also make their home in this habitat, which is a re-creation of the environment around the Chesapeake Bay Light Tower. The original tower is approximately 17 miles off Virginia's coast directly where the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. There are seven species of sea turtles world wide, five of which make their home in Virginia waters.

In addition, a sea turtle hatchling laboratory offers visitors a glimpse at young loggerhead sea turtles. Since 1989, the museum has raised these small reptiles to study their growth and witness their early development. Facing a perilous life journey, hatchlings are extremely vulnerable to predators and misfortune. Few wild sea turtle hatchlings grow to adulthood as only one in 1,000 survives. Born the size of a quarter, these young sea turtles must survive more than 20 years before they can reproduce.

Fun Facts

  • Kemps ridleys nest on the beach during the day whereas all other sea turtles nest only at night.
  • The temperature of the sand surrounding the sea turtle eggs determines their gender. Higher temperatures produce females and lower temperatures produce males.
  • Kemps ridleys are the rarest and most endangered sea turtles in the world. They only nest on beaches in Mexico.
  • Although all sea turtles are air breathers and must come to the surface periodically, adults can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes.
