Blackpool Zoo is a medium sized animal collection, set in 32 acres, with over 1500 mammals, birds and invertebrates from more than 400 species.

Blackpool Zoo has always shown innovation in design and boasts two "interactive" enclosures - Lemur Wood and Amazonia - where visitors can get up close to the animals on show. A new penguin pool has opened with underwater viewing and, from 2010, this will be linked to the renovated sealion enclosure.

FUN THEMED WEEKS AT BLACKPOOL ZOO Fri, 7/31/2009 - 10:53 AM — rudy

Big Cat Week starts from Saturday 1st August.  This week visitors can find out more about lions and tigers as well as some of the lesser known European carnivores.  There will be conservation displays including big cat artifacts, face painting, badge making, colouring competitions and enrichment workshops.

From Saturday 7th August visitors can learn all about how to be more environmentally friendly during the zoo’s Green Week.  As well as face painting and badge making, guest from Blackpool Council will be running recycling workshops.  Children can also take part in fun games including a special ‘Think Green Trail’ around the attraction.

It’s Monkey Madness from Saturday 15th August.  This themed week aims to highlight the threats to the rainforest and its inhabitants such as the Red Titi monkeys.  The zoo holds the stud book for all Red Titi monkeys born world wide and has xx living at the attraction.  All games and activities will be related to the rainforest.

The final themed week is based on the Year of the Gorilla.  Starting from Saturday 22nd August, the education team will be focussing on gorillas, highlight their plight and raising awareness through games and fun activities.

Jude Rothwell, PR and Marketing Coordinator, said: “Our themed weeks are great fun for all visitors, both adults and children of all ages.  They are a brilliant way to entertain the children during the summer holidays.

“All the activities and games are all based on important conservation issues so children can learn about the natural world and their environment as well as enjoying themselves and meeting others.”

Don’t forget that the zoo is open until 9pm every Wednesday in August.
