Missouri Botanical Garden invites children to stop by for Great Wed, 12/30/2009 - 12:02 PM — rudy

The Missouri Botanical Garden invites children to stop by for Great Green Adventures all year long! Great Green Adventures are drop-in programs designed for children ages six through 12 to explore special areas of the Garden, learning about plants, nature and green living. Enjoy journaling, stories and games on the third Saturday of each month at 10:30 a.m. or repeated at 1:30 p.m. Cost per adventure is $3 per child; Garden members are free.

Advance registration encouraged, but not necessary to join the fun; simply meet in front of the Ticket Fort at the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited to 20 children per program. Themes change from month to month and include:
  • Jan. 16: Winter Color Walk. Just because there aren’t many plants blooming outside doesn’t mean there isn’t any color in the Garden! Search for common and not-so-common colors.
  • Feb. 20: Sweet Smells of Indoor Gardens. Enjoy the peak of the camellias and fragrant olive trees in the Linnean House and smells of early spring in the Shoenberg Temperate House.
  • Mar. 20: Bird-Friendly Gardens. Learn what makes the Garden friendly for birds all year long, and take home bird-friendly flower seeds to plant.
  • Apr. 17: Celebrate Sakura. Why do trees have flowers? Learn the answer as you locate some spring-flowering varieties.
  • May 15: Exploring the Sensory Garden. Use your senses to decide if other animals and insects enjoy the sensory garden as much as people do, and take home a scented plant.
  • June 19: What’s all the Buzz About? Insects are an important part of any garden, but what do they really do? Search the Garden for insects and learn ways to help them at home.
  • July 17: Garden Groceries. Plants supply us with food, but what else do we get from them? Search high and low for plant uses.
  • Aug. 21: Green Submarines. Join an exploration for plants that prefer living in water!
  • Sept. 18: Garden Apartments. Search the Garden for clues about the animals, insects and spiders that make their home here.
  • Oct. 16: Signs of Fall. As the season changes, explore the Garden to find colorful fall leaves to watercolor.
  • Nov. 20: Mum’s the Word. Chrysanthemums are blooming! Take a walk to explore their colors and history together.
  • Dec. 18: Trees with Winter Coats. Why do some trees keep their leaves or needles over the winter, when others lose them? Get to know some of the Garden’s trees by their bark, needles or berries.
Great Green Adventurers will receive an adventure passport to collect a stamp for each completed program. Collect three stamps to enjoy one free admission pass to the Children’s Garden. Collect six to receive a Great Green Adventure t-shirt, or collect all 12 and get a free Children’s Garden water bottle featuring Finn the frog mascot.
One adult is required for every three children. Activities are designed for ages six through 12, but younger siblings may attend. Cost is $3 per child ages three to 12; children of Garden members are free. Great Green Adventures are held weather-permitting.
General admission to the Missouri Botanical Garden is $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Children ages 12 and under and Garden members are free. Please note: special admission rates apply the third weekend of May for Chinese Culture Days.
