As close to Africa as you'll get without a passport.
There is a flurry of activity at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo around the state-of-the-art zoological exhibition...The African Rift Valley, opened to the public in May 2003. This state of the art exhibit immerses visitors in up-close animal encounters and interactive learning experiences. The exhibit features a giant “talking” baobab tree, research outpost, play village and safari discovery trail. The biggest attraction to open in Colorado Springs in many years, ARV is the signature exhibit at the Zoo’s “front door,” spotlighting the zoological park’s world-renowned giraffe herd – the largest of any zoo in the world.
Zoo visitors hand-feed the giraffes, with over 20 in the herd, at several feeding stations located throughout the exhibit. A twice daily giraffe “stampede” is a hit with guests as they line the elevated boardwalk to watch the giraffe herd pass through a drawbridge, allowing them to leave their state-of-the-art building each morning and re-enter each evening. It's an experience you won't find at any other zoo in America!
