Aquarium News Aquarium of the Pacific Debuts OCEAN ON THE EDGE Exhibition Long Beach, CA. - More than 12 million people have visited it. Over 12,500 animals call it home. Its cultural festivals unite diverse ethnic communities. It brings together scientists, decision-makers, and the public to address pressing environmental issues. It's the first in the museum or aquarium industry to become a Climate Action Leader™. The nonprofit Aquarium of the Pacific has evolved beyond a traditional aquarium since it opened in 1998 and is now celebrating 10 years of ocean adventure and education. Brooklyn's Biggest Baby Boy Turns One Brooklyn, NY. - Akituusaq, a Pacific walrus celebrated his first birthday. This marks the first birthday of a baby walrus in the New York Aquarium's 112 year history. Only ten such rare births have occurred in any aquarium with only five surviving past the first year. At birth, Akituusaq weighed in at 115 pounds and has gained plenty of weight. Korean Whale Museum to Contain A Dolphin Aquarium Ulasn, South Korea. - The museum is expected to be completed in a year's time at a 3,500 square meter compound nearby Ulsan's research center for whales. It will showcase whale hunting equipment from the days of old and even a reconstruction of a place where whales were cut up into pieces. The museum is also expected to have an aquarium for dolphins. The construction of the tunnel-like aquarium has never been tried before in Korea and is expected to provide visitors quite a sight since the tunnel will pass through the entire building. |
Zoo News Kansas City Zoo Auctions Animal Naming Rights Kansas City, MO. - She's Ryan Lea and she was born on May 23 - both of them. Ryan Lea Thomas, the human girl, was born on May 23, 1995, and Ryan Lea, the Grant's zebra, was born May 23, 2008 at the Kansas City Zoo. The young zebra filly didn't have a name until the night of June 6. That night was Jazzoo, the Zoo's single largest fund-raising event of the year. During Jazzoo, the Zoo auctioned the name of the young zebra and that of a female chimpanzee, born September 1, 2007.

Hide The Giraffes! Ramat Gan, Israel. - Jewish authorities in Israel have ruled that giraffe milk and meat qualify as kosher food. Veterinarians at the Safari Park in the city of Ramat Gan said they took a sample of giraffe's milk while treating one of the animals and discovered that it clotted in a way that is in line with Jewish law for kosher certification, Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported Friday. Unique Butterfly Exhibit Opens At London Zoo London, UK. - A revolutionary photography technique capturing the intricate details of butterflies down to the finest scale launches as an exhibition at ZSL London Zoo on Monday for National Insect Week. This is the first ever exhibition of these giant butterfly prints - revealing microscopic details of these captivating insects to the smallest scale and clearly showing anatomical features like their cells, hair and scales. Watch Cheetahs Go From Zero to Sixty at Kansas City's Zoo Kansas City, MO. - They're fast. At more than 60 miles per hour, they're very fast. But can they catch a "lure" that is kept just out of reach? The Zoo's three young cheetah girls, GiGi, Claire and Sadie, put on an impressive exhibit of speed and agility. Keepers, through a system of ropes and pulleys, have built a run in the cheetah exhibit. The system is much like those used in greyhound racing, and pulls a fabric "lure" intended to mimic the action of prey. Smithsonian Funds Antarctica Adult Education at Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure
Salina, KS. - Rolling Hills Wildlife Museum announced today that it has received a $5,000 grant from the Smithsonian Community Grant program. This competitive grant was awarded to assist in the development and implementation of The Antarctic Wildlife Expedition program and Taste of Adventure: Antarctica. These public educational programs are being produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibition Wondrous Cold: an Antarctic Journey. Potter Park Zoo's Michigan Rattlesnake Study Lansing, MI. - Potter Park Zoo, Michigan State University and Central Michigan University are teaming up in a groundbreaking conservation study tracking the habits of two snake species native to Michigan. Veterinary staff at Potter Park Zoo is participating in a collaborative effort to investigate the habitat requirements of Eastern Fox Snakes and Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes. Gator Falls Water Flume Ride and Albino Gator Exhibit Open at Lowry Park Zoo Tampa, FL. - Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is inviting zoo-goers to get their feet wet (and a whole lot more) with the new Gator Falls water flume ride and white "albino" alligator exhibit, now open in the Zoo's Mason M. and Charles P. Lykes Florida Wildlife Center. "As we continue to build and diversify the Zoo's animal collection with new animals like the white alligators, we are also adding new experiences for our guests like the Gator Falls flume ride," said Lex Salisbury, president and CEO. Ten Dollars Could Result In Owning A Zoo Hog This year's "Go Hog Wild for the Zoo" motorcycle. The bike, which was custom-fabricated by Pat Briggs of County Line Choppers, is valued at $50,000 and will be raffled off by the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Raffle tickets for the motorcycle are $10 each. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age. The winner need not be present to win and must take possession of the motorcycle within one week of the drawing, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 21. |

Join staff on a behind-the-scenes tour, learn about our animals and their diets, and assist our staff in the preparation of food and feeding of some of our animals. Participants will also observe our Aquarists accomplish some of their daily care and maintenance tasks. This limited opportunity is only open to 10 participants. Each week Brittany and Alicia write and post a blog on our website describing their life as Clinic Supervisors at Second Chance Wildlife Center. They take you through Maryland's cycle of wildlife young by species being discovered by humans and brought in to their center. It is a center which operates on a shoestring budget and the many small donations from those dropping off abandoned and injured animals. Zoo and Aquarium Visitor Suggestion: We have received many inquiries concerning zoo and aquarium photography. The themes seem to deal with two areas, needing assistance in understanding what is allowed and how to photograph in a zoo or aquarium. As a result we have put together our top ten tips and addressed some other questions. We sent these hints and tips to all of the US aquariums and zoos several weeks ago, and invited them to modify whatever specifics do not fit their facility and post it on their web site if they do not already have a photography section. Here are some useful tips and guidelines that apply to any zoo or aquarium photography excursion you undertake: Many facilities have informed us that they plan to offer low/no cost fall and spring photography classes. We recommend that you take a few minutes to subscribe to your local zoo or aquarium newsletter. Then keep your eyes open for special events that are photography oriented. In our next issue, we will address losing weight at the zoo. We have a very diverse base of readers that not only includes zoo visitors, but zookeepers, trustees, and zoo administrators from around the world. Directions: Cut the paper plate in half. Place the rounded edge at the top and draw a face on both sides. Tape or paste strips of crepe paper to hang from the bottom flat edge of the plate. Poke a hole through the top of the plate at least 1 inch away from the edge. Place sting through the hole and tie in a knot. Hang on a tree or railing outside. It will last until the next rainstorm or heavy wind. Penguins Go To The Zoo. A man drives to a gas station and has his tank filled up. The gas pumper spots two penguins sitting in the back seat of the car. He asks the driver, "What's up with the penguins in the back seat?" The man in the car says "I found them. I asked myself what to do with them, but I haven't had a clue." The clerk ponders a bit then says, "You should take them to the zoo." "Hey, that's a good idea," says the man in the car and drives away. The next day the man with the car is back at the same gas station. The clerk sees the penguins are still in the back seat of the car. "Hey, they're still here! I thought you were going to take them to the zoo." "Oh, I did," said the driver, "And we had a swell time. Today I am taking them to the beach." Dolphins Are Smarter Than People. Why are dolphins smarter than humans? Within 3 hours they can train a man to stand at the side of a pool and feed them fish! Mightiest of Animals A lion woke up one morning with the urge to assert his superiority over his fellow beasts. He strode over to a monkey, and roared "Who is the Mightiest of Animals?" "You are," said the monkey, cowering. Then the lion approached a warthog. "Who is the Mightiest of Animals?" roared the lion. "You are," said the warthog, quivering with fear. Next the lion met an elephant. "Who is the Mightiest of Animals?" roared the lion. The elephant grabbed the lion with his trunk, swung him in the air, slammed him ten times against a tree, threw him into a dense patch of thorns, and strolled away. "Okay!" shouted the lion.
