Box Turtle Babies Crawl Out of Their Shells at North Carolina Aquarium

North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island

Manteo, NC - On July 26, 2009, the Roanoke Island Aquarium welcomed some unexpected additions when four tiny hatchlings emerged from a well-hidden nest in the Eastern Box Turtle exhibit. The baby turtles, each of which measured just over one inch in diameter, are the first to successfully hatch at the aquarium since the exhibit opened in the fall of 2007.

A Second Manta Ray is on Exhibit at Georgia Aquarium

Atlanta, GA - The Georgia Aquarium announced today the addition of a second manta ray into The Home Depot's Ocean Voyager gallery, the largest aquarium exhibit in the world with 6.3 million gallons. The addition of the female manta ray makes the Georgia Aquarium the only aquarium in the United States to ever house two manta rays, and one of only four aquariums in the world to display this species. The new manta ray will join the Aquarium's original manta, Nandi, four whale sharks and thousands of other species of sharks, rays and fish in the exhibit.

Audubon Zoo's Baby Orangutan Get the OK to Meet the Public This Week

New Orleans, LA - It's a rare opportunity - something visitors haven't experienced in about thirteen years - an adorable (and critically endangered) baby orangutan at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.

Baby Menari was born at Audubon Zoo on June 10, 2009. Starting on September 26, guests will be able to see her each day between 1pm and 2:30pm in the World of Primates exhibit (pending extreme weather or other unforeseen factors).

"They are two dimensional," notes executive director Greg Bockheim, "but are vibrant additions to the Zoo staff, and we are certain that they will be effective in spreading the word of the Zoo's no smoking policy in a friendly way." The flat, new staff members are new signs drawn in the likeness of an actual zookeeper. These fun, life-size "zookeeper cutouts" will make smoke free signage friendly and visible.
