Virginia Aquarium is Awarded Accreditation by Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA)

Virginia Beach, VA - The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center has earned accreditation by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, an international organization representing the greatest body of professional expertise and knowledge regarding marine mammal care and veterinary medicine.

Only marine life parks, aquariums, zoos and research facilities that meet the Alliance's rigid standards and guidelines are granted accreditation. The Alliance accreditation committee made the announcement at the organization's annual meeting in April.

Kure Beach, NC - Want to spend a day at the beach surf fishing? As summer approaches, the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher prepares to begin their popular surf fishing workshops. This three-hour workshop includes one hour of classroom discussion, then fishing on the beach nearby. In the classroom, participants learn about common fishing equipment, baits, and fish identification. Then the fishing begins. Participants practice the catch and release method as they search the waters for fish and then learn how to use a cast net to catch their own bait fish.

Grandmother Donates Her Time and Grandchildren to Virginia Aquarium

Their efforts were collectively honored Wednesday evening as the Van Heest family was presented the Volunteer Hampton Roads Family of the Year Award.

A Newborn Male Reticulated Giraffe Calf at Rio Grande Zoo

A Cute New Chick to See this Summer at The Toledo Zoo

Toledo, OH - The Toledo Zoo once again celebrates an important hatching as it welcomes the arrival of a white-naped crane. The chick was born to mother Anita and father Ivan on April 27. Both Anita and Ivan are first-time parents, and this is the first time that this species has been hatched at The Toledo Zoo. The crane family can be seen in the area between the waterfowl and penguin exhibits; they can also be seen from the bridge ramp.

Louisville Zoo's Baby Giraffe, Bakari, Is In Good Health and On Exhibit

Louisville, KY - The awe-adoring public is now able to see baby Masai giraffe, Bakari, (Pronounced bah-KAH-ree) outside on a regular full-time basis with the rest of his herd-mother, Malaika, an 11-year-old female; Mariah, a 21-year-old female; and Walker, a 14-year-old male.

"He is doing great" said Candy McMahan, Louisville Zoo Assistant Mammal Curator. "We have seen marked improvement since his periosteal stripping procedure. He has wonderful mobility and is now running around the yard at top speed."

There has been an animal issue brewing and kept under wraps even longer than the breed selection of the new First Puppy. What is President Obama's favorite zoo animal?

Before President Obama was elected to office I was bugging his press team for this small confidential piece of information. Then came President Obama's trip to the Honolulu Zoo, and I thought I had lost the story. However, no one asked him the critical question, "What is your favorite zoo animal"?

Six months later and after a trip to DC, it was pointed out to me that as President of the United States, President Obama can not disclose his favorite zoo animal. Doing so could have political and possibly international ramifications.
