Royal Oak, MI - The Detroit Zoo's newborn aardvark, Amani (Swahili for "peace"), was born at 1:05 a.m. on December 8 to mother, Rachaael, and father, Mchimbaji. The Zoo is awaiting DNA test results to determine the sex. The 23-inch infant arrived hairless, weighing 3 pounds, 10 ounces, with ears measuring 4 inches. "This baby can only be described as hideously cute," said Director of Conservation and Animal Welfare, Scott Carter. "Rachaael is a first-time mother and is showing great maternal instinct."

Eleven Hummingbirds Migrate North To Montreal's Biodome

Montreal, Canada - Eleven energetic and brightly coloured hummingbirds were introduced into the Tropical Forest at the Montréal Biodôme this morning, around 9:30 a.m.
The two species come from Trinidad and Tobago, islands located 17 km off the coast of Venezuela. The white-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) and the rufous-breasted hermit or hairy hermit (Glaucis hirsuta) are both native to low-altitude rainforests like the one recreated at the Biodôme.

Oregon Zoo Wants the Public To Come Along With Them To Belize

Portland, OR - Those looking for a Caribbean adventure or desiring to traverse through rain forests can explore travel opportunities at the Oregon Zoo's Wild World Tours program, and go on an 11-day adventure through Belize. Zoo Conservation Manager Anne Warner will lead the tour, which takes place March 1-11, 2009.

Rowers Donate £7,000 to Bristol Zoo for Cameroon Primate Project

Bristol, UK - Two Atlantic adventurers who completed the toughest rowing race on earth raised money for Bristol Zoo Gardens and handed over a cheque for £7,000.
Bristol lads Niall McCann and James Burge rowed for 63 days, travelling 3,000 miles across the ocean in the 2007 Atlantic Rowing Race, risking shark attack, freak waves, shipping lanes, tankers and extreme weather conditions.

Paignton, UK - There's a family reunion on the cards for some gorillas at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park. The bachelor group of critically endangered lowland gorillas has welcomed two new arrivals who are full brothers of one existing member and half-brothers of another.
Brothers Kiri (aged 4) and N'Dowe (pronounced Endover), who is 5, have arrived at Paignton Zoo from Stuttgart Zoo in Germany, where they were raised in the gorilla nursery.

Watertown, SD - The big news at Bramble Park Zoo, in Watertown, South Dakota, is Pallas' cat kittens. Pallas' cats are small brown-spotted cats a little larger than a large house cat. They are found in Central Asian Steppes at elevations of up to 13,000 ft. The cats are highly endangered and are very difficult to breed in captivity, and have young survive, due to disease. After several years, we have done it and have three viable offspring that are soon to go on to another zoo.
