Potter Park Zoo's Recent Birth Brings the Zoo's Mandrill Population to Four

The Baby Doesn’t Have a Name Yet, and Potter Park Zoo Would Like Your Help Naming Him

By Payal Ravani

Lansing, MI - Potter Park Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a mandrill, born on November 18, 2010.

“This mandrill birth was recommended in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) 2009 Master Plan, and is one of only a dozen births in the last five years,” said Rebecca Phillips, Vice Coordinator for the Mandrill SSP and a primate manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. “Having a new mandrill baby born under the SSP recommendations is important for strengthening sustainable populations that allow visitors to appreciate animals.”

San Diego Zoo's First Baby of the Year Turns Out to be the Devil Himself

With Horns Above its Eyes, This Reptile is Still Known as a Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko

By Dani Dodge

San Diego, CA - The San Diego Zoo’s first baby of the year looked quite angelic as it crawled on leaves and even one keeper’s finger Monday afternoon. But because of the horns above its eyes, the reptile is still known as a satanic leaf-tailed gecko. The San Diego Zoo is one of only seven zoos in the United States with this species in its collection and one of only two breeding them.

Reptile keepers were thrilled with the hatching of the gecko, which weighs less than a gram and is smaller than a dime. It has a number, 911001, but no name.
